A VERY INTENSE GUIDE TO MEXICO CITY BY ALICE CARRETT

Potentially the easiest city to fall in love with. There is too much to do. Too much to see. Too much to feel. It's fantastic and wild but deeply relaxing. Stay in Roma or Condesa - a non-negotiable. This is the best list I could manage of all the best things to eat + drink + shop + do in Mexico City. The Google maps (160 saves and counting) is the full guide however favourites are listed below.

EAT

  • Jenni's Quesadilla's Everything you want out of a streetside vendors. Obsessed! Went back for more! Get the Zucchini Flower.

  • Taqueria el Pasito Late night Taco's run by a mother and daughter. Fell so in love with them both and the food was incredible. Tip big they deserve the world.

Taqueria El Pasito
  • El Vilsito Late night tacos

  • Bacal It isn't always open so check their instagram. Eric who owns it is maybe the most fantastic person you will ever meet. Natural wines - experimental music. Homemade pasta sometimes!

  • Taverna Beautiful with an incredible tostada!

Expendio de Maiz
  • Panederia Rosetta Fancy yum sweet bread.

  • Expendio de Maiz An incredible experience. They don't do reservations so get there early and you can wander around to the local vintage stores. A must visit!

  • Cantina Tio Pepe Opened in 1870 and sitting on the edge of Chinatown in the city. A no frills trip back in time.

Churreria El Moro Centro

Only go to the city one! 1935 - cutie workers and all the fried yum things.

  • Fonda Margarita My favourite breakfast of the trip. Traditional. Gorgeous. Made friends at our shared table. Would go back everyday for Café de Olla if I could!

  • Bosforo No.1 Bar recommended by our favourite local restaurant owner. Eric we love you!

  • Esquites Durango An absolute must-visit and local rec from a new friend! Corn fans only!

  • Taqueria Los Parados Streetside tacos made fresh. So incredible! I am a little bit triggered because we attempted to each way too many. I think even the staff were shook about how many we ordered.

  • Helados Cometa Ice-cream store also recommended by a new friend (Susy this is for you!)

  • Café de Nadie Cocktail bar

Café de Nadie
  • El Cardenal A few locations and a must-visit for dinner or breakfast

  • Restaurante Taquería Los Cocuyos Cdmx

  • El Hidalguense Barbacoa is from the namesake's Mexican state. Specialists in all the yum things!

  • Las Costillas

  • La Clandestina A curated mezcal bar hidden behind an unassuming storefront. Follow the glowing mezcal bottles.

  • Malcriado Great little wine bar in Condesa. The group that owns it runs a few places in the area and all are worth checking out. A chilled red goes a long way on a hot afternoon here. Also great to come back to for the largest breakfast serving you will find.

  • Nido Café For great coffee. All coffee in CDMX is generally fantastic I will say.

Esquina Comun
  • Esquina Comun Secret restaurant! DM them for a reservation well ahead of time and the location and menu will be revealed the night before.

  • Riviera Del Sur One of the few Cantina's left in the area. Great to sit street with a drink and some guacamole.

  • Mi Compa Chava For the seafood obsessed. Don't get the can sashimi thing. We fell into that trap and felt so sick after it.

  • Pastelería Ideal TREATS!

  • Panederia Rosetta MORE TREATS! Also a good way to try the famed Rosetta restaurant without eating pasta in Mexico.

  • Del Bosque Restaurant Inside a museum and possibly tostada of the trip!

Del Bosque Restaurant
Contramar
  • Contramar I felt obligated to put this on here! We went for my birthday - full of Americans. I completely understand why the fish was amazing and the dessert cart was incredible. Was it the best meal we had? Probably not. Do I get the hype and would recommend? Defs.

SHOP

  • Orfebre Curated jewellery store. One of the few places you can buy Nefelibata Jewellery. I bought the sweetest glass necklace and earring and have deep regrets about not buying more.

Hi-BYE
  • Banzo by Camilla Banzo Really sweet showroom. You can book an appointment through their Instagram

  • Lolo Café A street side indie magazine stand that also serves a great coffee

  • IKAL Allegedly the largest range of Jacques Marie Image. I believe them! Really cool undiscovered eyewear brands mixed in with classics. Go for the showroom alone!

  • Hi-BYE

  • Aurelia Concept Store All latin designers and brands. So beautiful - impossible not to walk away with something.

  • Maria Ana Shop DM them on Instagram to book in a showroom visit. You can purchase in the showroom - if they don't have it available they can make it for you that week. I wanted to buy everything - team was incredible!

Audette
  • Audette Incredible local handbag brand. I got overwhelmed and didn't know what to bring home with me so immediately placed an order once I was back in Australia. Don't make my mistake! Coolest range of handbags & accessories using local leather + Vegan cactus leather options.

  • PAYS Fantastic clothing & accessories.

  • Varon Official Cool kids jewels!

SLEEP

DO

  • Zinco Jazz Club Low key expensive entry but a fantastic night with loval jazz fans.

Museo Anahuacalli
  • Museo Anahuacalli Diego's evil fortress. He is definitely the villain but a chic one! A must-visit and definitely my favourite museum of the trip.

  • Chapultepec Castle I honestly just love a good castle. Great view of the city and gives you a good understanding of the history of Mexico and the revolution.

  • Frida Kahlo Museum I mean you have to right! Definitely buy the ticket that includes Diego's hectic castle. I do wonder what Frida Kahlo's thoughts would be about her likeness being sold to tourists on a hairbrush and in the form of a sparkly pen.

TIPS AND THINGS

  • Around Roma is so safe you can walk everywhere! Ubers are incredibly cheap though so you can honestly take an unlimited amount

  • Don't drink the tap water - you can buy big gallons at the super market for teeth brushing and things
