Ristorante Abruzzi A low-fi restaurant loved by locals and clergy alike. Currently in the lead of best carbonara in Rome. Visit on the understanding that you will drink far too much as the waiter sets down their digestif offering at the end of your table. They don't take bookings online however the team is pretty great if you call ahead in broken Italian / English.
It may not be on the menu but plead for the Puntarelle salad if it's in season to freshen up during the Carbonara marathon.
Note, as a classic Roman dish you should attempt to order this with every meal. Thinly sliced greens with anchovy, lemon and oil perfection.
Al Pompiere
Come here for the decor if nothing else. A classic date night that gives Fratelli Paradiso energy. Green felt walls with walnut timber throughout. Everything is fantastic though ensure you get the Zucchini Flowers and Wild Strawberries w/ Vanilla Ice Cream for dessert.
A bold call but favourite lunch of the trip. Located in the jewish quarter, the artichokes are by far the best you will ever have. Honestly order a plate each as they aren't to be wasted. Cooked to perfection you can eat the entire thing. Washed down with a bottle of wine over a long lunch of course.
Giolitti Old school Gelateria served roman style with whipped cream if you want. Think cute boys in traditional jackets in an old cafe with great branding. Pickup a hat or keyring if you have already reached your gelato limit for the day.
Il Fornaio
An incredible bakery that offers treats by the kilo.
Go for a Campari spritz around the corner at Bar Farnese and then stock up for a late breakfast in your apartment the next day. Essential to try any treats on offer with cherry in it.
A classic cafe bar with the sweetest owner who surely is 150 years old. Stop in for a handmade sandwich and very liberally poured Campari spritz. You often see young Roman's stop in for a bite to eat and drink before heading out for the night.
This is definitely a taste of old Rome.
